Joe Boyd & Olivia Chaney

Songs & Stories

Thursday 15 May
8pm

As a record producer, Joe Boyd’s list of credits goes back to Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band. Later he travelled the world for his legendary Hannibal label, to Mali, Cuba, Brazil and Bulgaria in search of talent, and produced REM, Taj Mahal and Kate & Anna McGarrigle. His book White Bicycles: Making Music in the1960s provides an anecdote-filled view of that formative decade.

At talks and readings, Boyd has invited singers to illustrate events with their own interpretation of the music he writes about. Last year, he brought the then little-known Olivia Chaney to sing a Nick Drake and a Molly Drake song at an event in London – she dazzled him and the audience with her interpretation and he has invited her to join him again. Boyd’s anecdotes and readings from White Bicycles will be interspersed with Chaney’s affectionate take on songs by Nick Drake, Sandy Denny and others Boyd has worked with.

Performance runs: c. 90 mins (no interval)
