Debussy (arr. Benno Sachs) Prélude à l’après-midi d’un Faune
Zemlinsky (arr. Erwin Stein and Andreas Tarkmann) Six Maeterlinck Songs Op. 13
Mahler (arr. Erwin Stein) Symphony No. 4

Northern Chords Ensemble perform a selection of works that straddle the turn of the 19th century, a period of glittering sound worlds and startling new ideas in music. Debussy’s sensual dream is partnered with dark, enigmatic fairy tales from Zemlinsky, while the towering Mahler’s Fourth Symphony journeys from earthly sensuality through a dance of death to a child-like vision of heaven. The works are performed in chamber music arrangements that reveal magic and intimacy at the heart of music on the grandest scale.

Northern Chords Ensemble lit up last year’s Festival with Mendelssohn, they return joined by are wood Young Artist at ENO Samantha Price and UEA’s Director of Music Stuart Dunlop for an evening of music transfigured.

Performance runs: c. 80 minutes (plus interval)
